Having problems logging into international forums?
June 10, 2008 – 12:44 amThis one annoys me a lot! South African ISP’s who don’t know how to properly configure a transparent proxy server.
I don’t mind if they force us to use their transparent proxy servers, but it does get to me that we still pay for the bandwidth which they have cached. Anyway, some of the transparent proxy servers, especially those of Telkom / SAIX change IP’s the whole time. Or do they hop from server to server? I don’t know, and I don’t feel like trying to figure it out either. But, a lot of forums (and other session based websites) use a method to check the originating IP when you sign in. And if it changes, well then, you get kicked out. Most forums have a cookie option (that little tick-box saying “remember be”, or “stay logged in”) which solves this problem. Why? Your browser then manage the sessions. And yes, sessions can be hijacked a bit easier with this method, but that’s for another day.
So, back to the problem. To make sure you stay logged into a forum, use cache.saix.net & port 8080 for your proxy server, in your web browser.
I’m ont going to go into detail about how to set it up, since this isn’t a HOWTO, and your web browser has a help function (normally pressing F1 wil bring this up), or you could google HOWTO setup a proxy in your web browser.
